Worship Music for Sunday, October 23, 2016

"Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory..." (1 Peter 1:8)

I came across this verse reading through Peter's first letter to Jewish believers scattered in the Dispersion in the early days of the church. Like modern believers, many of them never saw Jesus in person, and would not see Him until He returns at the end of the age. In spite of that, and in spite of the difficulties and persecution they endured for this Jesus they had never seen yet believed in and loved more dearly than their own lives, they had "joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory"! Think about those words describing their joy: inexpressible (too great and deep and rich to ever be adequately summed up in any language a human could utter) and filled with glory (overflowing with the greatness of who God is and His manifest presence in their lives). Wow! Does that describe our joy? Is that the kind of worship we bring to our gathering on Sunday morning? It can be... if we take the time today to set aside a moment to drop everything and just worship Him!

“You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
    and praise the name of the Lord your God,
    who has dealt wondrously with you.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.
You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,
    and that I am the Lord your God and there is none else.And my people shall never again be put to shame." -- Joel 2:26-27 (ESV)

The Lord's presence is all we ever need to satisfy every desire. Think about that. Everything you have ever sent your heart after in its search for life and happiness and peace -- it's all found in Jesus! As you listen to the worship music for this week and read the attending scriptures, will you meditate on that truth? Will you allow your heart to settle on Christ and be satisfied by Him? Will you stop your restless quest for love in the things this world offers and "know that He is the Lord your God and there is none else"?

Worship Music for Sunday, October 9, 2016

Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” (Genesis 22:5)

In the story of Abraham sacrificing Isaac, there is an overlooked element that modern worshipers would do well to notice: Abraham's faith. When Abraham tells his servants, "We are going to worship," he doesn't mean he and Isaac are going to sing a few songs, hear a nice sermonette about how to be the best Abraham he could be, and then go home and watch football and fall asleep on the couch. All true worship involves sacrifice, a laying down of something we value greatly, a death towards anything that competes with total devotion to God in the affections of our hearts. Because God knows something about us most of us don't even realize: we are what we love most. Abraham was worshiping God by proclaiming there was nothing he loved more, no greater affection or devotion, than YHWH.

What our hearts chases after most passionately defines us more than any other single aspect of our being. There is no room in the presence of God for any lesser loves, even family. Yet many of us come casually into the presence of the Most High, dragging along a suitcase full of idols that have captured our hearts. Oh, we want Jesus, but not at the expense of all these other gods. Some of us just want Him to validate and bless all the other lovers we have given our hearts to. But some of us come ready to worship, ready to put to death anything that threatens to steal our devotion from God, dead to any lesser loves.

"Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south." (Psalm 107:2-3)

One of the ways "the redeemed of the Lord say so" is by proclaiming His praise in song. When we gather together in corporate worship and sing His praise loudly and enthusiastically, those whom the Lord has redeemed are saying so -- no, singing so! Come join the redeemed in singing so this Sunday at The Ridge!

Worship Music for Sunday, September 25th

"Praise the LORD! I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation." (Psalm 111:1)

Have you ever heard someone say, "I don't need to go to church to worship God; I can worship God just as well by myself at home"? There's a Greek word for that: hogwash! Not only is corporate worship commanded over and over in scripture, it is part of the design of our hearts. We long to belong to a community, a family. We are relational creatures by nature because we bear the image of our relational God. He has existed for all eternity as Three-In-One, the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, all living in perfect, loving communion with each other. It's in our DNA! You cannot worship just as well alone as you can "in the company of the upright, in the congregation," regardless of what you may think or feel. Won't you join us this Sunday for worship as we gather to "give thanks to the Lord with our whole hearts"?

Worship Music for Sunday, September 18th

 

“Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
    “return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;     
and rend your hearts and not your garments.”

    and he relents over disaster.

The Israelites in Joel's day were experiencing the judgment of God because they had forsaken His ways and disregarded His Word. They loved their comfort more than His presence. So He gave them exactly what they wanted -- and they were suffering for it. God gave them over to their enemies and allowed their land and crops and vineyards and cities to be trampled and destroyed. They could not even bring grain and drink offerings for proper worship as the Lord prescribed because they had nothing left to bring. "Yet even now.." God invited them back into His presence; even though they had completely abandoned Him, He was ready to restore them IF they returned and repented. 

God is calling us to return to Him, Ridgers. He is calling us out of complacency and comfort, out of rebellion and idol worship, back into His presence. He wants to restore a heart of worship to Church at The Ridge. This week as we sing together, we are calling out to Him to restore us to repentance and for a fresh outpouring of His Holy Spirit. God is on the move and up to something big at The Ridge! Are you ready to meet with Him this week?
